Distribution of Employment by Broad Sector, 1986-1996 & 2000
The dualism of the employment situation has continued to be the defining factor in understanding the dynamics of the labour market. The formal sector of employment, comprised of government and private enterprises subject to regulations, expanded from 31.2% to 39.2% of total employment between 1986 and 1996, while the informal sector's share (excluding agriculture) remained stable at 16.8 and 16.7 per cent over this period. Reflecting the shift of population from rural to urban areas since 1986, employment in the money economy of agriculture dropped from 26.4 to 22.3 per cent, and in subsistence agricultural employment from 25.6 to 21.8 percent, between 1986 and 1996.

Distribution of Employment by Inustrial Activity, 1986-1996 & 2000.
In terms of distribution by industrial activity, the structure of Fiji's employment has been undergoing shifts typical of other developed countries. There has been an absolute shift out of agriculture towards manufacturing, but except for the business cycle-volatile construction sector and utilities, all other industrial activities also registered gains in employment over the 10 year period.
