LABOUR FORCE EVOLUTION BY AGE AND SEX, 1986 - 1996

Fiji's labour force has been growing at a relatively slow rate, due mainly to the level of emigration of its citizens that accelerated in 1987. An off-setting factor has been the rise in the labour force participation rate of females resulting in significant increases in their numbers entering the labour force each year. The two tables below illustrate trends in growth and composition of the labour force by age group and gender over the period 1986 - 1996 as based on census results that reflect (net) emigration over this period. As indicated, the labour force grew by 25,000, or an average annual rate of 0.8%.
